It’s a loaded question. And a big one with several implications, tangents and consequences. While it’s significant enough to be reflected on often, it certainly isn’t the only question you should be focused on. Because you just may not have the answer. At least for now. And here’s why — as person, you’ll always keep evolving and so will your purpose depending on the stage of life you’re at.
Yes, I’m aware this goes against the notion of the “self-awareness” movement out there but knowing yourself and discovering your purpose in life are entirely different (albeit related) aspects. It’s better to focus your energies on knowing yourself right now because it might lead you to discover your true purpose some time later. Unfortunately, “beginning with the end in mind” doesn’t work here because your life isn’t a project or a destination, but a mission and a journey.
Also, I feel should everyone had an answer to this question the world would be a better place. It doesn’t matter if you’re 16 or 76, it’s great that you’re pondering about this right now. Everyone deserves a fulfilling life after all! And as we all know, the time we’ve already lived out didn’t happen overnight. It took time. That’s exactly what applies to knowing your purpose, you may not get an answer right now or tomorrow or a week, month, year or even years from today. And that’s okay. Just because you don’t know about your purpose in life doesn’t mean you haven’t lived or deserve to live. What it means is you need more time and insights to understand your big “why.”
If you’re 12/16/20/25 beating yourself up for not knowing your purpose in life, please know that the ones who have the wisdom to know their “why” at this age most likely become monks by 30 or less. It’s surprising what knowing your true purpose can do to know. And believe me, you just not be ready for that.
What am I getting at? This — know the purpose behind what you’re doing right now might lead you to make better decisions today and tomorrow that may have an impact in your future. If you keep at it, you just may discover your purpose in life over time. And even then, it’ll probably keep evolving as you grow wiser.
