Companies committing to operational effectiveness are walking a path of mediocrity.
Why? Because they can’t help but look the same as their rivals, except now they’re competing on price (we know how that goes) and destroying each other’s profitability.
Call it a bloodbath or a competition; unless organizations switch from obsessing over economies of scale to deliberate positioning, they will barely have room to grow, innovate, or turn profitable.
Also, doing the same thing as your competition, only faster, better, and cheaper, isn’t sustainable. Which is why I can’t help but wonder — if everyone knows running faster leads nowhere, why does every organization keep doing it?
